How we formulate
As we all know, I have been immersed in the skincare industry for quite some time now, and through my experiences with various ingredient formulations and the talented cosmetic chemists I’ve collaborated with, I can’t help but feel deeply concerned that modern, “popular” skincare often fails to truly nurture our skin’s health.
If you speak to any dermatologist or naturopath, they will affirm that a simple routine is genuinely the best way to support our skin's health and function.
We now possess an expanding body of research—especially as the skin barrier and microbiome take centre stage—revealing how our skin truly operates and what it desperately needs in order to thrive.
It’s crucial to start by acknowledging that our skin is not just an outer layer, but our largest organ. It plays a vital role in our well-being, serving as a protective barrier with essential functions that extend far beyond mere appearance.
Let’s be clear: poreless skin does not equate to healthy skin.
Current research suggests that when we overdo it with chemical laden skincare, we may be undermining our skin's natural ability to protect us by disrupting the skin barrier and the delicate skin microbiome.
It’s interesting, isn’t it? Our love for skincare could actually be harming our skin's health and function.
Excessive use of products can lead to various types of inflammatory disorders and may even trigger underlying issues. Plus, when our skin barrier is compromised, it struggles to provide proper protection against skin cancer.
It's pretty amazing to think about how our quest for “perfect skin” can actually put our skin's natural defences against skin cancer at risk. It really makes you stop and consider the trade-offs we're making! Is it really worth it?
For me, when it comes to formulating for MOTHER SPF, I often engage in deep conversations with the green cosmetic chemist I collaborate with. I find myself asking:
- What is the fundamental goal of our skin?
- What role does it play in our overall health?
- And are the ingredients we choose genuinely enhancing and supporting this vital purpose, or are they sacrificing it for a fleeting moment of superficial beauty?
The unsettling truth for many sunscreen formulations on the market is that these ingredients are, in fact, detrimental—they're damaging our skin barriers, leading to inflammation, while the skincare industry continues to grow, relentlessly targeting younger and younger consumers.
We choose to formulate with a health goal in mind, not merely an aesthetic one.
