What is the goal of manual lymphatic drainage? And why is it important to stimulate the lymphatic system?
Tandia, what a fantastic question to start with! Imagine your lymphatic system as the unsung hero of your wellbeing, working overtime to detoxify, regulate fluid, and defend against nasties like toxins, viruses and bacteria. Without it, we'd face serious trouble within just 48 hours. Lymphatic drainage isn't a fleeting trend; it's practice that was first found by a Danish Doctor in the early 1900’s, but is finally getting its due recognition.
Our aim? To enhance what your body does naturally, but on turbo-charge. It's about elevating your body's own cleansing process to levels it simply can't achieve alone.
What are the signs that your lymphatic system needs some love?
Our bodies are incredible communicators, signalling when the lymphatic system is sluggish through symptoms like (but not limited to); fluid retention, bloating, constipation, headaches, or that general feeling of being 'off.' These signs—whether it’s puffiness around your eyes, itchy skin, to sleepless nights or even the subtle shift in how you feel —are your body's way of asking for a lymphatic boost.
They now know there are 2 parts of the lymphatic system found in the brain and also in the gut. This allows us to achieve so many results for so many ailments.
What are the long-term well-being benefits that come from regular lymphatic treatments?
This is where the conversation gets intriguing. Amidst a sea of what I call 'lymph washing,' genuine lymphatic drainage stands out for its profound well-being benefits. It’s not merely about immediate visual improvements; it's the sustained, deep-rooted sense of vitality and wellness that keeps our clients returning.
A proper lymphatic treatment empowers your body's natural detoxification rhythm, promoting a sense of lightness and purity that's both felt and seen. It's tailored wellness at its finest, considering the unique rhythm of your body's needs.
What are other ways we can improve our lymphatic wellbeing outside of having a treatment?
Hydration is the cornerstone—WATER cannot be overstated. It's the essence of your lymphatic 'river' system, facilitating smooth, unimpeded flow. Beyond that, lifestyle adjustments play a pivotal role. Opting for whole foods over processed options, reducing intake of common culprits like caffeine and alcohol, and integrating daily habits such as dry brushing or engaging in gentle, lymph-friendly exercises.
These practices enrich the professional treatments, sustaining and amplifying their benefits.
What are your favourite beauty tools we can use at home to keep our lymph flowing?
Embracing home care is pivotal, and my go-to tools? Dry body brushing stands at the forefront for its simplicity and effectiveness, followed closely by gua sha and cupping—when practiced correctly. These tools are not just accessories; they're integral to maintaining your lymphatic health, requiring proper technique to unlock their full potential.
Why is it important to use natural skincare products when it comes to the health of our lymphatic system?
Our skin, the body's largest organ, absorbs everything we apply to it, making the choice of natural over synthetic products vital. It’s about respecting our lymphatic system’s role in cleansing and protecting our body by choosing products that support rather than hinder its function. Pure, natural ingredients ensure that we're nourishing our skin and lymph in harmony.
How do you like to start your day?
Having years ago worked as a Personal Trainer, I traded the Gym for Pilates about 15 years ago. It's a practise I love but being so busy with the business find it hard to make it to a class at the moment so instead, my mornings begin with activity that signals care and attention to my body— it doesn’t need to be elaborate. I start with a big glass of water to wake up my internal systems and start the day right, followed by some form of movement that resonates with the season and my body's needs, be it a long walk or some weights and a home exercise routine, or some days an Infrared Sauna (and yes, Sun lighten are the best!). It sets the tone for the day and helps me get my endorphins going!
Outside of the lymphatic system, what are your other favourite daily health rituals?
A holistic approach guides my daily rituals. I am all about progress over perfection and believe in balance! Simple things like ensuring ample restorative sleep, trying to eat enough as someone who is a “busy bee” (pun intended) I can slip into forgetting to eat which is terrible for hormonal health.
I like to supplement where I need to (and always put Collagen into my daily coffee = balance!), and cultivating a mindset anchored in gratitude and positivity. It's about building a foundation that supports both physical and mental health, recognising that true wellness is a multifaceted journey.
The best health advice you ever received?
In those early years in the Fitness Industry, a wise mentor shared the invaluable insight that growth and healing demand rest. It taught me the importance of listening to my body, understanding that sometimes, the most productive action is to embrace rest.
If we do not live in Melbourne, how else can we connect and learn from you?
