Meet Kate Dalton, Founder of Mayde Tea
Introducing our second guest of our 'Mother 2 Mother' Series: Kate Dalton, the founder of naturopath formulated organic boutique tea Mayde Tea. You would have seen Mayde Tea feature in MOTHER's stories. I have been a long term loyal fan of the therapeutic blends and have always admired how Kate shares her passion for plant-based healing and natural living through her hand-mayde blends.
We both share the same value of truly believing that nature provides us with the best resources for preserving our health.
Thank you so much for joining us today Kate! I can’t tell you how excited I am. How are you?
I am so great thank you!
In this generation we’re surrounded by incredibly challenging surroundings. As someone who has really just started their business, what are your top tips would you give as a female in business?
I have learnt a LOT in the 10 years of running Mayde Tea. It has definitely had its ups and downs, but starting Mayde Tea is by far the best thing I have done (apart from becoming a mother of course!) If I was to offer any advice, it would be to start a business from your biggest passion. It’s hard work, so its important to absolutely love what you are creating! Then the best way to make the big decisions (to a certain degree) is by trusting your intuition- if an opportunity arises and its not a 100% full body yes, then it should be a no thank you!
I tend to find my energy from my surroundings, the ocean, my family, my mum, where do you find your energy for life from?
Definitely my family, my friends and nature. Getting out in nature and even just feeling my feet in the sand at the beach is the best thing to do for my mental health.
What are your tips for staying calm and collected when things go wrong?
Coming back to my purpose. My purpose is to get the magic of herbal tea into as many hands as possible, in the most sustainable way. I also make sure that I take time on my own when I can, even if its 30 minutes. I’m a much better mother when I take the time to look after my own mental health. I have also implemented better boundaries with my phone, and as soon as I start scrolling- I pick up a book instead.
What values do you hope to instil in your children?
To love their bodies, follow their intuition, and to look after our planet.
Family is of course everything - how have you found this balance between work and family?
It’s been a juggle. After I had my daughter, I tried to get back to full time work right away. This was not sustainable, and I definitely did things differently second time around! I hired more staff to allow for a few weeks off work when he was born, and I returned to work slowly. I absolutely love running my business, so I’m continuing to ease back into more work as the timing feels right. The kids are growing up incredibly fast, so I make sure that the days I am with them I am fully present.
Do you and your family have any Mother’s Day traditions?
My favourite part of the day is waking up and having the kids hop into bed with me to give me a big hug. We usually do what feels right on the day- usually I get to choose where we are surfing and we spend the day on the beach.
Finally, is there anything you and your family cook for Mother’s Day?
I’m lucky that my partner is an amazing cook, and he usually lets me request anything on the day. It’s usually a big breakfast out on the deck with eggs, toast, pancakes and fresh fruit.
You can read more about Mayde Tea here. I have tried and love all the herbal blends but if I HAD to choose a favourite it would be either Serenity to help me sleep like a baby or Energise for the mornings when my nervous system is running a little too fast and having any form of caffeine is not a good idea!
