Clean beauty has many definitions depending on who you talk to and confusion arises because there is no governing body that has actually defined the term ‘clean’. In order to clear up the confusion and give us a prettier picture, we have interviewed our favourite clean beauty heroes on what clean beauty means to them and why they are happy it’s here to stay. 

Welcome Alex Wilson, the founder of clean beauty retailer Heartwood, Perth. A Sandalwood sanctuary, that leaves you on the verge of tears when you have a runny blocked nose and miss out on the most exquisite smells that awaken your senses the minute you walk in the door.

Blepharoplasty eyelid surgery to hide the fact that we haven’t slept well in years and re-injecting our own blood to create the infamous “vampire facial” because Kimmy K did it, so why wouldn’t we? These things all seem, well, rational to us now. But will future generations think so?

Instead of letting history repeat itself (just with different tools and ingredients), maybe we can learn a few things from past beauty rituals. 

Asking for a friend, but how often do you think about where your ingredients are coming from? We’re betting not much, because this was never something front-of-mind for us, either. 

That is, until we realised how seriously important the origin of your ingredients are! For your skin sake and the plant (Obvi). Thankfully (for you) we’ve put together some of the things to look for to make sure your ingredients play nice with the planet and your skin goals.

The skin microbiome is paramount to skin health. You could be drinking gallons of green juice daily, but if your microbiome is f’d up, your skin health is in the toilet. One of the ways you can do a number on your microbiome is by using preservatives.

Silicones are synthetic fillers that are used to create a smooth texture on the skin. Now don’t get too excited as this turns out to be a downside to silicone’s filler abilities. 

They like to form a “film” on your skin (and not the type you want to see). This film can not only clog pores but given they coat the skin like gladwrap, silicones can stop other ingredients from penetrating your skin!

Passionate about anything cruelty free, mother earth and very much a country girl at heart… we loved listening to how Kirsten handles her dry skin (hello, Australian climate), what she looks for in an SPF (MOTHER is a match). 

Elle Halliwell is an Australian journalist, speaker and author whose mission is to inspire others to live their best lives (can confirm we have been inspired by this beauty).
